24/12V
Battery Converters/Equalizers
We
stock and sell the 20 amp Solar Converter/Battery
Equalizers as seen here: http://www.solarconverters.com/equal1.htm

Many
Canadian spec LandCruisers, and LandCruisers coming over from Japan use
two 12V batteries in series to create 24V's for the vehicle systems.
While 24V's is a more efficient system then 12V's, it can create issues
when trying to make 12V appliances work with your truck. Some people
tap onto the lowside battery for their 12V draws, and then start going
through batteries.
Non-balanced
loads on the twin 12V batteries used in series to create 24V will force
unfavourable condition. Simply put - the charging system puts 28 V on the
battery system - it does not care if that is 14 V + 14 V on each battery
or 18 V and 10 V on the 2 series batteries - it is still 28 V total. In
unbalanced loads the charge un-evenly, with the battery receiving 18v destroying
itself from out gassing, and the 10 V battery destroying itself from sulphation.
The differences in battery health lead to eventual destruction.
The
Solar converter/equalizer works by using its bi-directional power flow
to keep the battery voltages equal at all times. If the voltage on
the lower one is low, it uses the charge of the upper one (thereby reducing
its charge) to increase the lower one. Conversely if the upper battery
is the weak one, it will use the power of the lower one to charge the top
one to make them equal. Only if you go above the rating of the unit will
the battery voltage become different and even then when the current goes
back to its rating it will bring the batteries back to equal.
Batteries
of similar health have similar chemistries when the voltage is the same.
The equalizer is trimmed to be nearly exact in voltage. The
converter is about 96 % efficient of the power it is processing. If it
is not processing power there is no loss except for the 17 ma (.017 A)
drawn by the unit from the 24 V side.
The
equalizer does not have to be used to equalize the batteries. It is also
an excellent source of clean power, to run 20 amps of 12V load off the
24V battery system, or 10amps of 24V off a 12V system.
The
converters come with a one year manufacturer warranty.
We
have worked with the manufacturer, and now supply the 20 amp model with
two LED's on the unit. With the converter/equalizer hooked up to
load balance the batteries, the green LED indicated circuit board health.
The red LED will light up when either battery is 5% off the center value,
indicating you have drawn a heavy load off one battery, or to investigate
fuse health in the unit.
Note:
If you have one poor battery in your system the Solar Converter/Equalizer
will not compensate for the poor battery. It will equalize both batteries;
in effect draw down the good battery to try and maintain the poor battery.
BOTH batteries must be in good health to start.
